Calicut:, Calicut also known as Kozhikode is one of the main cities of Kerala. It is the administrative head quarter of the state. The city is famous among European as Portuguese Navigator Vasco De Gama first landed in India in 1498. Along with tourist destination, it is also trading center for cardamom and black pepper. It has the ideal with Arabian Sea on the West and Wayanad Hills on the east which has made famous tourist destination. Due to this geographical location and historic background, it has beautiful countryside, calm backwaters, pristine beaches, Wildlife sanctuaries, rivers, historic sites and Ayurveda medicines.
Major attractions in Calicut:
Beypore beach is absolutely must see which 10 kms south of Kozhikode at Chaliyar River. It has palm fringed shores and offers scenic beauty of sea waves lapping against the coast. It has the historical significance of early days of Arab and Chinese travelers. At that time it was important port and harbor and trade and maritime center. Later on it was flourished as shipbuilding center especially for its traditional URI or Arabian trading vessel, is in great demand by Western Asia. If interested, you can still watch the creative process of building the Uri at the shipyard.
The pristine beach is relatively quiet having land for 2 km long having the path made up of huge boulders and opens out in the sea. It is the lovers point secluded amongst the rocks to pass romantic time in beautiful sunset. It also offers sports facilities for the adventure lovers.
A Museum is committed to the well-known Indian statesman, V.K. Krishna Menon who was great orator and spokesperson for India at the General Assembly of the UN. The Krishna Menon museum exhibits his personal belongings. The art section with collection of real mural paintings of Keral and modern art carved wood, ivory objects, stone sculptures and collection of original oil paintings of renowned maestro Varma brothers are worth watching.
There is a beautiful destination Thusharagiri which is a small tribal village about 50kms east of Kozhikode. Here two streams converge here which is originating from the verdant Western Ghats forming the river Challipuzha. The gushing river forms three waterfalls throwing fine snowy spray of water. The name ‘Thusharagiri’ is due to this snowy effect caused by the waterfalls. This evergreen waterfall flourishes rubber, pepper, areca nut, ginger and other spices in this region. This place is the paradise for trekking lovers.
It is also recommended to visit a dam located around 45 km from Calicut. You can enjoy the crocodile farm run by the state forest department which can give you some good photographic memories.
How to get there:
It has Kazhikode international airport which receives daily flight from all over the world. Regular buses are available from the major cities like Mangalore, Thiruvananthapuram, Cochin and Chennai. You can get trains from Kochi (Cochin), Coimbatore, Chennai, Mangalore, Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkata from Kozhikode railway station.
Climate, Food and Shopping:
Calicut experiences a tropical climate. The summers are hot and humid with heavy rainfall and winters are dry and pleasant. Calicut is best in winter or spring season with pleasant weather.
Food lovers can enjoy the delicious freshly cooked seafood delicacies at the seaside stalls. You can also enjoy sweet tender coconut water that makes a real refreshing drink.
You can pick up fancy clothes from the shops on S M Street and Mavoor Road. You can buy spice from the wholesale spice market at the Big Bazaar Road. Handloom fabric is also very much famous produced in the factory next door. You can find famous handicrafts like coir products, buffalo horn carvings and miniature snake boats.
